To provide for the dissemination of leading new technologies or applications to the welding industry worldwide. At the same time, AWS will continue to maintain a leadership position in the production of codes, specifications, guides, recommended practices and books related to welding and joining.

The American Welding Society's Board of Directors has authorized free electronic distribution of the current ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes. The board decided this important voluntary welding safety and health standards document should receive the widest distribution possible and has directed that Z49.1-2005 be made available for free download.
